"Nahmakanta Blog"

May 1st, 2009.......Hello Friends of Nahmakanta...! this is our first edition of our new blog. Everyone's a blogger these days, so why not us. We're gonna try to update it at least once a week, no more than a paragraph or two, with the emphasis on basic camp information and natural observations (fish, birds, moose, air, sky, wind, insects, etc) from the Nahmakanta area, made by either us (Don, Angel, and kids) or our guests. Hopefully a few good photos, too. Absolutely no religion or politics, we promise ! (for that you've got MSNBC and FOX, right ?) We'd really like to hear back from any of you, at..... info@nahmakanta.com ...the ice went out 10 days ago, which is at least a week earlier than average. It's been unseasonably warm, a few days a have reached the 80's. The roads into camp are in great shape for this time of year....no major washouts on the Jo Mary Rd, unlike last year when there were few that a school bus would have fit inside. Except for yesterdays 1/2 inch of rain, it's been dry the last week or so. The red trilliams aka "skinkin' benjamins' are up but not quite blooming yet. All in all it's more like May 10th than May 1st. Tonight we'll paddle over and see if the smelts are running up Pollywog on their yearly spawning run. Usually herring gulls will congregate over near the stream when the run is on....haven't seen any yet. It's possible they ran early this year and we just missed them. If we see suckers moving upstream, we're too late. Trout, salmon and even togue will be holding over near the mouth of Pollywog feeding heavily on smelts for the next week or two...... |
